Dafra Motos

A Brazilian company, which was founded not long ago and has been increasingly prominent among the leading motorcycle manufacturers in the country, DAFRA Motos was established in 2008 by the Itavema Group, the largest group of car dealers in Latin America, which has more than 30 years of history in Brazil and now has companies in different segments, such as road transportation and factories of plastic packaging.

The DAFRA´s plant in the Polo Industrial de Manaus (AM) was installed in an area of 170,000 m2 of land and it has 35,000 m2 of built area. The plant currently has over 500 employees and an annual production capacity of 200,000 motorcycles.

The product line of this Brazilian brand consists of motorcycles between 100cc and 400cc and the Super 50 and ZIG 50 mopeds. The street category is represented by the models Supper 100, Riva 150, Riva Cargo, Apache RTR 150 and Next 250, while scooter category has the Cityclass 200i, Citycom S 300i and Maxsym 400i. For the CUB segment DAFRA offers the ZIG+ and, for lovers of custom style motorcycles, Horizon 150 and Horizon 250 are available.

Global strategic partnerships

Since 2009, DAFRA has established global strategic partnerships with major international motorcycle manufacturers such as BMW Motorrad, Indian, Haojue, SYM, Ducati, TVS Motor Company and KTM. These companies have extremely important characteristics in common, such as product quality, technological superiority in terms of designs and manufacturing processes, excellence in development and extensive experience in the two-wheel sector. Furthermore, both Haojue and TVS are among the world leaders in motorcycle production and sales, while BMW is internationally renowned for its premium products and high technological level and SYM has a strong presence in key markets such as Asia, Europe and the United States. The partnerships include not only the manufacture of products in the Unit of Manaus, but include also the transfer of knowledge and technology to DAFRA and its employees directly involved in the process, and the joint development of models with complete focus on the Brazilian consumer. This approach chosen by the company allows its teams to have access to high technology and deep knowledge of the two-wheel segment, which makes it possible for DAFRA to compete with traditional brands in the country and achieve a really strong level of competitiveness.

Laboratory of pollutant emission control and experimental analysis
In 2009, DAFRA inaugurated a Laboratory of Pollutant Emission Control and Experimental Analysis in its industrial headquarters, which received more than R$ 8 million investment and has a total area of 4,700 m2 (2,000 m2 of built area). This laboratory is considered the most modern in Latin America and it allows the engineering area of the business to develop technological innovations and its own know-how. In addition, in the near future, it will enable the registration of new patents. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to perform structural analysis, vibration analysis, and conceptual and wear tests and studies on greenhouse gas emissions. For example, it has power dynamometers (for chassis and emissions), accelerometer and other equipment to simulate riding conditions. During the tests, the motorcycles are connected to computers and are subjected to stress levels similar to those that they might face in different driving conditions, such as variations in speed, temperature, slope and topography. Reports generated bases on the analysis enable DAFRA's engineers to verify the implementations required to obtain the best performance in every situation. Besides having its own laboratory of emission control, DAFRA developed in 2010 a Clean Room to produce high-performance engines. Such room was created through a partnership with TVS Motor Company, a leading motorcycle manufacturer in India and in the world. The Clean Room of the factory located in Manaus is a controlled environment and it is used to manufacture engines with high performance and durability. It is the only clean room in the two-wheel sector in Brazil and it was built based on a concept of technology that is a benchmark worldwide, using the best practices in the manufacture of high technology engines.

Environmental initiatives

DAFRA carries out initiatives related to environmental management and the issue of sustainability in its industrial headquarters, such as a Wastewater Treatment Plant and a Waste Recycling Center. The Wastewater Treatment Plant, for instance, receives all effluents generated by the grease traps of the restaurant, bathrooms and locker rooms of the Unit. Periodically, this effluent is collected and analyzed by an external laboratory that produces a report which will be sent to the Institute of Environmental Protection of Amazonas - IPAAM to demonstrate the quality of the treatment provided by DAFRA. The Waste Recycling Center of the plant receives, separates, presses and sends for recycling, co-processing or reuse 81.5% of the residues generated in the Unit. Materials such as cardboard are pressed and used in the manufacture of recycled cardboard, iron is pressed and sent for recycling, while the plastic is sent to a partner company where, after recycling, it is transformed into plastic bags. Contaminated oil undergoes a process called re-refining in a specialized company that is licensed for this activity. The residue of Health Services (outpatient clinic) is also incinerated by a licensed company.  In line with initiatives for Amazon Forest preservation, Dafra mantains inside its facilities 200.000 square meteres of native forest.
